The rise of regions is not accidental in view of the decline of the territoriality, basic principle of the modem spatial organization. This paper rethinks the spatial transformation of international relations in terms of regions. It aims at developing, by a kind of normative investigation into the literature on the regions, a theoretical platform for further empirical studies on the new spatial aggregation based on the transnational dynamism, key feature of the second wave of regionalism. Four main concerns are surveyed. First, the change of spatial perspectives in social sciences is illustrated to understand the new dynamics of international spatial transformation. Second, the reemergence of regions is interpreted in the international theoretical context and the new international space formed by cross-border movements is conceptualized in terms of transnationalism. Third, with the introduction of the concept of 'regionness' as an alternative of territoriality, the region as a system is conceptually reconstructed. Finally, the 'new regionalism' as a governance form of transnational regions is investigated in comparison with the 'old regionalism' to show the structural change of regional governance.
