Modem homiletics is going through a new turning point while recognizing the importance of Narrative. So far preachers have woven preaching with doctrine in the center, classified the gist centering around proposition and preached with logics and proposition in the center. They have done interpretation type preaching that explains the Scriptures and the argument type preaching that conveys the concept of preaching. However, now they are developing the frame of such preaching that has flow and unfolding like stories.
Since 1970's when a new homiletics movement took place, narrative preaching has been developed in a variety of forms by many scholars with North American circle of homiletics in the center. As methodologies of new preaching types have been being developed, narrative preaching has recently begun to be on everyone's lip as a theme which draws many preachers' interest also on the pulpits of Korean churches.
Recently in the industry of drama or movies of our country narrative scenarios are being firmly taking its place. Amidst the popular culturewhere huge power of stories is sweeping over, now the logical and often cutting slices in the preaching are made unable to overcome the power of stories. And as the importance of narrative is also being discussed in the field of general business administration, economy and legal groups where stories of life connected with court rulings are also talked about, it is taking root in our daily life as an important wisdom of life.
I think that at this point the evaluation and prospect of narrative preaching has a very important meaning. So far preachers of Korean churches have mostly preached traditional sermons that are logical and proposition centered. In this writing I have had an overall evaluation on narrative preaching which is newly emerging, coupled with the situation of this day and age. Then I have reviewed its positive and negative aspects and sought the direction of preaching of Korean churches.
In this dissertation I have minutely touched upon the narrative interpretation method of the Bible which is interested in internal facts by finding out the biblical history, geography, cultural background, psychological troubles of people, plots and even the parts hinted and omitted in the Bible so as to understand what the narrative preaching is. It is characteristic of the narrative interpretation method of the Bible to accept the literary method of study and also to touch on special incidents caused by God in the Bible by including even the hints contained in the incidents of the Bible the way a reporter covers a certain incident and reconstructs it. Accordingly, we can say that in order for a preacher to preach narrative preaching an important point is how precisely he sees the Bible and how realistically he conveys the biblical incidents to listeners.
First, narrative preaching is a way to preach with the Bible by strengthening the biblical foundation. We can say that the most important thing in the composition of preaching is a firm structure. I think that unless preachers follow closely the stories of the Bible text, they miss what the text intends to say although they quote various parts of the Bible and instead may say what they themselves want to say. Accordingly, if the composition of preaching is not firm, we can say that the preaching is the one that is not faithful to the Bible. The central aim of narrative preaching is in having the Bible talk by understanding the stories the Bible text intends to say and in having the preaching flow in the middle of the story of the text. Therefore, I think that narrative preaching has narrowed the space between the academic community and the faith community to overcome the dilemma of Korean churches corning from the disconnection between theology and church, in that unless the text is thoroughly read on the basis of hermeneutics, it isn't a possible method.
However, I make clear that turning to narrative preaching by Korean church saints who are used to the traditional preaching with main points in the center has many problems to overcome taking much time until it gets 'agreement to accept.' Then I present the way to overcome in this writing. I think that although applying narrative preaching to Korean churches pulpits has some negative elements, Korean preachers need to turn to narrative preaching that was started to convey the Bible text as is, in that it is a preaching methodology that emerged to return to the Bible. Amidst so much preaching being poured out like flood in this day and age, narrative preaching will have to be understood to mean that those who are hungry for the Bible would rather have the Bible talk than hear what the preacher himself intends.
