One of the current changes taking place in the American society may be that minority communities are becoming into the main stream Americans. Among other racial origins, Asian Americans have accomplished a brilliant success in spite of the short history of Asian immigration to the States. It is true that most of the Asian Americans now living in the States were born in Asia, that is to say that two-thirds of Asian Americans are recent arrivals.
Asian American were mistreated unlike those who came from Europe. They have endured low wages and social prejudices, but they contributed much to the development of American economy and the West. First Asian immigration started from China and was followed by Japan. The next group of Asian Americans came from Korea and Vietnam and other over Asia.
Milton Murayama is one of the leading Japanese Americans representing those Japanese who came to Hawaii. As a second generation Japanese American, he had described the lives of the sugar plantation laborers, mostly come from Asia. Before Murayama, there was John Okada who wrote No-No Boy. Here he described the delicate tensions that existed between Japan and America after the Pearl Harbor attack, describing the unjust imprisonment and resulted from replying no, no to the questions they've been asked.
Unlike most of the other second-generation Japanese American writers whose main theme was identity complex, Murayama seemed to propagate the Japanese spirit, especially Yamato damashi. Throughout his story, Murayama tries to be very careful not to openly praise the Japanese spirit. He criticizes and even warns the danger of the Japanese spirit including Yamato damashi through Toshio who always blames his parents and grandfather for leaving him a big amount of debt. But despite the critical perspective on the Japanese spirit, the author is seen to show high regard upon the Japanese spirit so that, without knowing, readers slowly come to accept Murayama's view and wave the Japanese flag.
