If the ecopoetry signifies an endeavor to recover the unity between nature(non-human life) and human, W. S. Merwin's poetry can be included in this category. Merwin focuses on the relation between nature(non-human life) and human. Mark Christilf calls Merwin the mythmaker, and Sandra M. Guy investigates mythic consciousness in Merwn's poetry because they think Merwin endeavors to recover the unity by representing the mythic world. To find the causes of the failure of recovering the unity, Merwin begins to examine the language. To him, language moves farther away from the sources of speech. This characteristic of the language is main cause of the failure. He tries to recover the unity by examining the relation between the language and the nature in Hawaii. This is an attempt to understand the whole ecosystem. The failure of recovering the unity contributes to 'silence,' a prominent characteristic of Merwin's ecopoetry.
Scholars have tried to find out the meaning of silence in Merwin's poetry. George Lesile Hart, Byers, argue that 'silence' is another name for 'despair' for Merwin, finding mainly negative meaning of silence in Merwin's poetry. On the contrary, Jane Frazier regards Merwin's silence as a method for the “real” communication. In poems like “Kin”, “The Child”, and “A Door” silence is not another name for 'despair', but a new method of communication. If silence is a way of communication, listening is sure to be another way of communication. Hence is the importance of listening. Practicing silence and listening to others is to open oneself so as to accept the unseen. Merwin argues that only through this process, human can experience the feeling of awe and learn humility, a key virtue to keep a harmonious relationship with all that is outside human beings.
