The purposes of this study are to analyze life of Korean residents from Japan returning to North Korea(repatriate) based on testimony of North Korean defectors in Japan, and re-illuminate North Korea system based on the results of the analysis.
As a result of the analysis, we found repatriates have formed not only their community but also had conflicting relationship with North Korea in culture and politics, though they returned to North Korea and stayed more than half a century there. However, they have formed relationship of coexistence with North Korea economically because they received much economic assistance from relatives in Japan.
Inflow of repatriates had a strong influence on economy, society, culture, politics etc, in North Korea. First of all, repatriates provided skillful labor power and advanced techniques for North Korea under constructive restoration after the Korean War. In addition, Japanese products and huge foreign currency were flowed to North Korea through relatives in Japan. It made a great contribution to informing capitalism culture to closed countries such as North Korea as well as initial industrial development in North Korea. Therefore, this study concludes that repatriates infused dynamic power into North Korea society and the repatriate project was much more advanced than investment of overseas Chinese to China.
