In relevance theory, it is claimed that the adversative connective but encodes a procedural meaning to guide the hearer to the intended interpretation. It is also claimed that this unitary semantics of but can accommodate the various interpretations of but, including interpretations such as the denial of expectation and correction. However, in languages such as Spanish, German and Korean, the two interpretations are encoded by different lexical items, which are referred to as PA- and SN-type conjunctions, respectively. These conjunctions and the corresponding English but-constructions are claimed to be sensitive to different types of implicature and negation. Because of these differences, in some theories, the denial of expectation but and the correction but are claimed to be different meanings of but. This paper closely examines these claims and argues that they do not support the ambiguity of but, thereby maintaining the unitary semantics of but.
