This paper aims to analyse the factors determining the scope and level of regional integration in Central Asia and try to propose future prospects. For the purpose, it will be examined accelerating and constraining factors to the integration, as well as the present situation of regional integration and integration policy of 5 Central Asian countries. In this context, it is to be assessed and investigated regional integration of the region from the both aspects of desirability and feasibility, and its various determining factors toward the integration.
The underlying logic of regional integration in Central Asia is the desire for economic growth, political stability and conflict prevention. Regional integration can provide effective tools for initiating and sustaining mutual understanding and dialogue among the states and creating a win-win position for all involved countries. It is an effective way to create a contemporary regional security system coping with the requirements of the Central Asian countries in new circumstances. In one word, it is ‘a regional process for solving common problems’. In other words, there is no alternative to intra-regional integration in Central Asia. It is the common destiny of the Newly Independent States of Central Asia, and it can be argued that its future depends on the acknowledgment by the regional leaders of their ultimate historical mission.
