According to Hurford's (1974) Constraint, a disjunction is not felicitous if one of its disjuncts entails the other. Gazdar (1979) observes that scalar implicatures can be used to obviate the constraint. Chierchia, Fox, and Spector (2007, 2008) also argue for a theory of local implicature using the obviation of Hurford's Constraint in disjunctions. On the other hand, Singh (2008) presents evidence indicating that implicatures can obviate Hurford's Constraint only in earlier disjuncts, not in later ones. He further observes that disjuncts should be neither in an entailment relation nor in a consistent relation. In order to account for his observations, Singh proposes an incremental evaluation procedure to check for inconsistency in disjunctions. However, it will be argued that the validity of his incremental procedure should be questioned in the sense that the procedure does not seem to be necessary. Based on this argument, it will be proposed to revise his "incremental constraint enforcing inconsistency (CEI)" by eliminating the incremental checking procedure, in order to better account for the felicity conditions of disjunctions.
