As the land was the most influential factor in agrarian society, and as the capital was the most crucial factor in labor-industrial society, the very core element in this swiftly changing information-oriented society that rules the age is, needless to say, the knowledge and information.
With this respect, no one can deny the simple and sure fact that the future railway age will be dominated by how well the players use the railway-related knowledge and information.
We all recognize that most effective way of using information in IT society could be achieved with the application of web environment which allows information to be easily accessible and sharable. Meanwhile, along with the intellectual property right problem, the closed mind-set and attitude of the players to the information sharing matter is a major obstacle to the wide use of railway knowledge and information, diminishing synergy effects.
In this study, the authors will review approaches of web-based application for the extended use of railway knowledge and information, ultimately aiming at contributing to development of railway industries.
