This study has the purpose to set connection of ‘Boo’ and ‘Gasa’, by comparison ‘HooWaMyung-Boo’ with ‘WooBoo-Ga’ during the later of the Chosun.
There is a difference that ‘Boo’ was written by Chinese letter and ‘Gasa’ was written by Korean letter. However those have something in common with that they are standing on intermediate position of poetry and prose. And also those have comparatively free form to be lengthened. These commons suggest possibility that ‘Boo’ and ‘Gasa’ have effects on each other. Therefore, some close connection with ‘Boo’ and ‘Gasa’ could be verified by comparison ‘HooWa Myung-Boo’ with ‘WooBoo-Ga’ of the same age.
This study considered connection ‘Boo’ with ‘Gasa’ by comparison expression, function and form of ‘HooWaMyung-Boo’ and ‘WooBoo-Ga’.
In the way of expression, ‘HooWaMyung-Boo’ and ‘WooBoo-Ga’ commonly have enumeration and antithesis. ‘HooWaMyung-Boo’ has enumerations of historical events. Enumerations of ‘WooBoo-Ga’ were used to criticize immoral behaviors of three WooBooes. There is only one antithesis of ‘HooWaMyung-Boo’, this is considered that antithesis was not worthy to express the subject. In ‘WooBoo-Ga’ antithesis with enumeration were used several places to expose WooBoo's behaviors.
‘HooWaMyung-Boo’ and ‘WooBoo-Ga’ have same purpose which is instruction by admonition. This commonness is verified by characteristics of genre of ‘Boo’ and ‘Gasa’. Those have commonly intermediate character of poetry and prose, this character is suitable to enlighten people.
At last, in the way of formal side, ‘HooWaMyung-Boo’ and ‘WooBoo-Ga’ have comparatively free form to be lengthened. By this characteristic those could express substantial contents and explanation about matters which cannot be handled by Chinese poetry and Shijo. Besides ‘HooWaMyung-Boo’ was written in question and answer form and ‘WooBoo-Ga’ was in description. These styles - commonly found in ‘Boo’ and ‘Gasa’ - were chosen by writers' intentions not by a characteristic of genre.
