'Guunmong' is a novel that Kim Man-jung, a scholar and politician in the seventeenth century wrote when he lived in exile at Seoncheon, quite differing from those heroism-based stories written by anonymous ordinary aristocrats in those days.
As for the theme of , Guunmong,' some see it as a Buddhist one, others as a Confucian one. The former doctrine grasps Seong-jin as the hero, while the latter doctrine recognizes Yang So-yu, a character in the dream, as the hero. However, it seems that this work is characterized by simultaneously suggesting Buddhist and confucian thoughts and clearly manifesting the relationships between Seong-jin and Yang So-yu, a character in the dream.
The Confucian theme of 'Guunmong' consists in its theme of an enthusiastic appeal as loyalty a subordinate sends his king and people. These contents may be said to be the expression of the loyalty that Kim Man-jung himself of fifty one years of age wishes to convey to his young King Sukjong of twenty seven years old. The letter of appeal that Yang So-yu, a character in the dream of Seong-jin, writes to his emperor earnestly seems of much significance. In order to communicate this theme, the author leads Yuk-gwan, an old bonze, to make his young disciple Seong-jin enlighten the truths of Buddhism with his whole heart. However, this Buddhist theme shows that it is of more importance to gain Buddhist enlightenment than to enjoy wealth, rank and fame out of success in life.
Furthermore, the title of 'Guunmong' contains in itself a philosophical meaning. 'Gu' signifies its hero Seong-jin and eight-fairy heroines. Thus the story depicts love among a man and eight women and married life among them interestingly. The eight women here symbolize eight signs of divination in the Book of Changes, featuring varied aspects of women. And 'Mong' means a Zenlike dream. Thus the hero dreams a dream in a dream for a long time.
Distinguished from other ordinary works in those days, the theme of 'Guunmong' and the implications of its title represent as a novel for intellectuals the characteristics of intellectual beauty.
