From the perspectives of research ethics in biomedical science, this article analyzes the Korean scientists' therapeutic cloning published in Science magazine in February, 2004. This article critically examines the research from various angles: source of 242 oocytes allegedly used for the research; IRB's research protocol review and approval; funding source of the research; authorship of the publication; and researcher's integrity. To specify, this article raises the following eight ethical questions:
1) Who donated those oocytes? Why have the egg donors not been compensated for their donation?
2) As a Nature magazine's interview article in May 2004 reports, is it true that a couple of young female researchers donated their eggs for the research?
3) Did the researchers take the appropriate steps to obtain voluntary informed consent from the oocytes donors?
4) Did the IRB at Hanyang University hospital in Seoul, Korea properly fulfill their responsibility both in reviewing and approving research protocol?
5) There does not exist an IRB at Seoul National University College of Veterinary Medicine, where the principal investigator of the human embryonic cloning belongs. With no IRB approval, how was the research made a legitimate one?
6) The researchers claim that their research was financially supported by an anonymous sponsor. But the acknowledgement of the Science magazine article states that the authors thank for the supports from the 3 different government research projects, which misleads people to believe that the Korean government endorses their research. What is the truth?
7) There are 15 co-authors in the Science magazine article, which includes Ms. Ky Young Park, far from an expert in this field, who has recently been appointed to be a Science & Technology Advisor to the Korean President Roh. Isn't that strange?
8) Two key researchers, W.S.Hwang and S.Y.Moon, are members of Ethics Committee of the Stem Cell Research Center, a government-funded institute. In May 2003, the center publicized the research guideline, which strictly prohibits creating human embryo for research purpose. Why did the researchers contradict themselves in doing research?
