This paper deals with Roman Polanski’s interpretation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth. In his 1971 film adaptation, many passages from the original play were cut or changed for cinematic purposes. The film’s ending is the most significant change from the original text. Polanski directly presents the bloody head of Macbeth beheaded by Macduff, and the scene evokes horror and the cruelty of human beings. He inserts a wordless scene at the end, in which Donalbain enters the witches’ lair. This scene implies that a power struggle will resume soon and will be repeated endlessly. Polanski is very negative and pessimistic about power, and manipulates scenes to strengthen his own point of view. His view of human nature is also pessimistic, which is exemplified in his depiction of Rosse, who betrays Macbeth later, and Macbeth who never regrets his own bloody actions. The film is a powerful depiction of ruthless power and Polanski’s own naturalistic, nihilistic and pessimistic presentation of the unstable nature of power and human cruelty.
