Although 60 years have passed that the Korean War broke out, the character and the significance of the war still remain dubious. Both in Korean Peninsula and within South Korean society, contradictory views over the meaning or cause of the war are still at odds against each other. For westerners including Americans who fought against the ‘communists’ and lost about 37 thousands soldiers’ life, it has been called ‘forgotten war’. Even for ordinary South Koreans, hidden stories of the Korean War could be heard recently through the works of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, Republic of Korea.
While the Korean War occurred in Korean Peninsula, and the most victims were Koreans, it was a global war in terms of combatting countries and its’ cause and effects. It contributed to solidify the nation division of the Korean Peninsula. It has transformed not only both Korea’s politics but also U.S’s political economy; the growth of military-industrial complex and the permanent war economy. The Japanese economy benefited from it most, and Japan stepped up the worldly’ economic giant on behalf of this war. In retrospect to the cold war history, it was just the beginning of the U.S’s intervention into the Third World countries.
The problem of how we can understand the Korean War and what we should memorize about it is a sensitive political issue in South Korean context. Facing the 60th anniversary of the Korean War, ceasing the Korean War would be pursued with the perspective of ending war in the Middle East, both of which may be perceived as long de-colonization project.
