This paper focuses on the Japanese Socialist Movement and the ideas, specially ‘the change of direction’ in 1920s. In Japan, after long period of silence of Socialism, with the liberal circumstances of ‘Daisho Democracy’, the Socialist Groups and Idea have begun to move. At last, the Japanese Communist Party was eastblished in 1922.
However, the Japanese Communist Party had decided to its dissolution by itself in 1924. After that dissolution, there were many various opinions and positions among the Japanese Socialists. At that aspects, we can see two original theorists of Japanese Socialism, such as Yamakawa Hitoshi(山川均, 1880-1958) and Fukumoto Kazuo (福本和夫, 1894-1983). Their theory were very influential and powerful. Nevertheless, with the Comintern's Thesis of 1927, they have lost their authority and influence rapidly.
Their Theories of Socialism, especially the ‘Change of Direction’ have given much influence on the Korean Socialist Movement of 1920s. Just as have said at the study of the Korean Socialist Movements, the ‘Change of Direction’ was not original to Fukumoto Kazuo. Yamakawa Hitoshi also had asserted the ‘Change of Direction’ before Fukumoto Kazuo. But Fukumoto Kazuo has criticized Yamakawa Hitoshi's ‘Change of Direction’, and asserted his own ‘Change of Direction’. The catchphrase of ‘Change of Direction’ was a general term at that time, and what was important was its contents and orientation. So there has been a difference between two ‘Change of Direction’s.
After Yamakawa Hitoshi and Fukumoto Kazuo, we could not see the original and creative theory of Japanese Socialism. Their theories and socialisms--the relevance is another question-- and the authority and leadership of Comintern always remind us of the autonomy and originality of Japan and East Asian Socialists in 1920s.
