This paper investigates similarities and differences between northern and southern elite culture by analyzing the Jeongju hyangan, the local yangban roster and its members' association, in Northern Pyeongan Province during the late Joseon period. By juxtaposing cultural practices and the identity of Jeongju elite in historical context, it explores historical issues concerning social mobility in the area, the power dynamics of local society, and the society's relation to the center. Detailed examination of hyangan members' social background and the way they organized and controlled local society shows that the local elite culture established during the sixteenth century on the basis of Confucian institution was very much like that of other areas of Joseon. This paper also argues that the local elite stratum in Jeongju successfully promoted, preserved, and defended its prestige and privilege by participating in various Confucian cultural activities-such as learning Confucian texts and taking civil service examinations, establishing in-group marriage ties, and monopolizing and manipulating local resources and powerful positions-despite the fact that increasing internal division and competition and the growth of less privileged status-groups posed serious challenges to the status quo.
