Although sexuality has been relatively a neglected subject in the sphere of Imperialism, there emerge three major issues to revise. First, some European historians argue that Empire-builders hesitated to make sexual contact with the indigenous people and the sexual relations happened in exceptional cases. Second, even though it was a master-subordinate relationship such as in the slavery system, sexual relations were romantic in its nature. Lastly, the shift in the sexual attitudes and activities of the Europeans to asceticism in the colonies from the late nineteenth century is interpreted to be caused by the crisis that arouse in managing colonies around the 1850s.
This article reconsiders all three interpretations mentioned above. From the moment that Europe came into contact with the non-European world, there appeared an extensive scope of sexual contact: copulation and concubinage mostly between white male and colored female. The characteristic of sexual relation was greatly coercive which was based on the Imperialism, the structure of domination. Also, the emergence of sexual repression among the European Imperialists in colonies during the latter half of the nineteenth century was not only due to the political crisis but also because of the Western development in sexual knowledge. Here, the 'Black Fear' in the matter of sexuality was intricately associated with Imperialism.
This paper, particularly, regards the policy of 'making distance' to colonial inhabitants as a background of bestowing a new masculine image to the white males, and the subsequent complex of sexual inferiority that white males had against the black males. Though physical subjugation in the sexual field was possible, real superiority of the European male was not secured in the vastly broadened imperial setting. Instead of seeking an ideal solution to this dilemma, white male had to resort to the second best choice of distorting 'science' based on 'morality.' In the two distinct developments of sexual knowledge-the scientism of sexuality and the discovery of female orgasm-, Europeans again created a fantasy on Blacks possessing a large sexual capacity, and eventually escaped themselves to the more superior field that was morality.
