It has been well known that interregional trade barriers are so widespread and severe in China. Therefore, regional markets within China are highly fragmented, as the chinese local governments have been long implementing various interregional protection measures. In this paper, we extensively study the market fragmentation in China as the outcome of interregional protection within China. The paper is organized as follows: First, we study types of interregional protection in China and then examine risk factors of interregional protection and market fragmentation in China. Second, we explore how the interregional protection by local governments has been formed in China. Third, we draw some theoretical background behind and policy implications of interregional protection and market fragmentation in China.
