This study examined the safety consciousness of a total of 1,074 students (200 primary school, 241 junior high school, 200 preparatory high school, 211 vocational high school, and 200 university). The students completed an indigenous survey developed by the authors, which included the following Questions: (1) describe accidents that you have personally experienced; (2) select the accident that was most severe; (3) what was the cause of the accident; (4) who helped you after the accident; (5) what type of help did you receive; (6) what can you do prevent such accidents in the future; (7) what can your family members do to prevent such accidents; and (8) what can your school do to prevent such accidents, The results indicate that the most severe accidents occurred during recreational activities, followed by traffic accidents, minor scrapes and injuries incurred during daily life, and minor injuries that occurred during sports activities and on stairways. The vast majority of the respondent noted that their personal carelessness was the cause of the accident, followed by problems with facilities, lack of safety consciousness, and not observing the proper rules and regulations.. As for social support, the vast majority mentioned their parents as providing support after the accident, such as taking them to the hospital, helping them recuperate, and providing emotional support. As for preventing such accidents from reoccurring, the vast majority answered that they should be more attentive and cautious, and suggested that family members and school authorities should provide better safety education. The result indicate a consistent pattern with other indigenous analysis of Korean participants. First, Korean respondents place a great emphasis on self-regulation and de-emphasize the environmental factors. Secondly, parents are viewed as providing significant support, but professionals are not mentioned as important figures. Thirdly, respondents mention education as being important, but do not point out the skill component involved in maintaining safety consciousness and behavior. Implications of these findings for preventing accidents and raising safety efficacy are discussed.
