This paper addresses the importance of peer feedback for novice designers in design education. Design students improve their design quality by the experience of having constructive suggestions often called feedbacks on their design work. Yet, there lacks studies on the peer feedback during design processes and the contents and the characteristics of the design feedbacks are not thoroughly examined. This study, with the purpose to gain better understanding of peer feedback, identifies and analyzes the contents and characteristics of the design feedbacks attained by design students. For Study 1, 42 freshmen majoring in industrial design participated. 789 feedbacks were collected during a design project from a studio course called ‘Information Design’. The contents and the characteristics of the peer feedbacks are identified through template analysis. The contents of the feedback consist of 3 types: 1) problem description, 2) modification suggestion, and 3) general comment. The overall characteristics of the peer feedback have different sets of opposing feedback styles. In Study 2, various issues raised from Study 1 concerning the peer feedbacks in design education are examined by administering a survey (N=40). The survey results show that the contents of the peer feedback exert positive effect on the ease of design iteration. The appropriate feedback time in the design process is during the visual execution stage. Adequate feedback style is constructive criticism with encouraging tone of voice. The activity of giving feedbacks also has advantages for the novice designers in their design processes. Peer feedback is essential for the novice designers. Peer feedback can be beneficial to the student’s design process especially in the novice stage of design education and giving and receiving peer feedbacks will in the end help improve the quality of the design outcome.
