FDI by Korean firms has rapidly increased recently and its cumulative amount recorded 91.7 billion dollars at the end of 2007. Internationalization stage of Korean firms is considered to be stepped into a growth or even a maturity stage for some large companies. In this context, it is very important for Korean multinationals to enhance the performance of their foreign subsidiaries. It is regarded that one of the ways to enhance their performance is to transfer much knowledge from the parent company to the subsidiaries.
This study empirically analyzed the impact of knowledge transfer from the parent company in Korea on the performance of its foreign subsidiary. Using the data collected from 128 foreign subsidiaries through e-mail, a multiple regression analysis was performed to verify the relationship between the degree of knowledge transferred and the performance of foreign subsidiary. Moderating effects of communication efficiency and absorptive capacity were also analyzed respectively on the relationship.
The regression results showed that the degree of knowledge transferred has a positive impact on the performance of foreign subsidiary as respected. However, the moderating effects of communication efficiency and absorptive capacity were not verified respectively, and instead the two variables turned out to directly have a positive relationship with the performance of foreign subsidiary.
