The purpose of this paper is to investigate the structural change in trade pattern between Korea and China. It is not surprising that China has been the most important trade partner with Korea since early 2000's, when we consider the trade volume and world market share rate between two countries.
The paper firstly focuses on the change in trade pattern between two countries since China's access into WTO in 2001 and it's effects on Korea. By the study, Korea has been much affected by China in terms of trade volume, balance of trade, employment and FDI. Thus it cannot be overemphasized the importance of China's role on Korea's trade. And the paper discusses the recent change in China's tariff related policies which directly affects on mutual trade relation between two countries.
Next, the paper presents empirical analysis on how tariff reduction would affect on trade between two countries by using gravity model. For the purpose, the paper employs the TCI(Trade Complementary Index), ESI(Export Similiarity Index) and other price index. The result shows the positive effects of tariff reduction on trade and it depends on the size of TCI and ESI respectively. Finally, it is strongly required for Korea to expand policy implication toward successful negotiation with encompassing major trading countries such as Japan, China and U.S.A. as well.
