This paper presents the melting process model of the frost layer of different properties. In this study, frosting test is performed and defrosting behavior is investigated on frost layer of different structures, and densities. In order to observe the frosting and defrosting phenomenon, a flat fin-tube heat exchanger is used. Two types of frost can be seen in the following ranges: the air temperature -5 ∼ 20 ℃, absolute humidity 1.979 ∼ 11.071 g/㎏' and inlet temperature of the heat exchanger held fixed at -20 ℃. Frost structures are observed with visualization and defrosting behavior according to the density of frost layer are analyzed by measuring the water drain rate when a hot fluid passes through the tube for removing the frost layer on the surface of the heat exchanger. Some fully unmelted frost layer on the surface of the heat exchanger drops down and drains when frost layer of higher density is removed. However, there are no residual ice lumps under the heat exchanger when frost layer of low density is eliminated.
