This paper presents a study on the development of a practical and quantitative technique for assessment of the structural health condition by piezoelectric sensors. The electro-impedance-based technique with PZT is very sensitive for evaluation of the incipient and small damage in high frequency range, however, the commonly traditional modal analysis method is effective only for considerably larger damages in low frequency. The paper presents the performance of the electro-impedance-based technique in detecting real-time damage on the specimen that is an aluminum plate fastened with bolts and nuts by different torques. The specimen is simulated with small damage of bolt loosening and the damage is detected and characterized by the bonded PZT sensors. A large amount of experiments are executed. Several conditions are imposed to simulate real-time damage, i.e. the location of loosening bolts and the loosening extent of bolts. The different indices are discussed and executed to efficiently quantify the damage conditions. As for the location of bolt loosening, the RMSD is found to be the most appropriate one. The possibility of repeatability of the pristine condition signatures of different sensors is also explored. The theory behind this technique and experimental investigations are presented in this paper. The analytical results strongly show the sensibility and reliability of this technique.
