Shakespeare seemed to make a solution for the chronic political conflicts such as usurpation against the king which occurred repeatedly in the history of England. It was believed, in the era of Elizabeth, that the conflict for power brought about the chaos of the nation as well as of the nature according to theory of 'Chain of Being' or 'Divine Right of Kings'. In the works of romance, including The Tempest, Shakespeare made use of the ritual, Christian or Bacchic, by which he tried to create the solution for the everlasting conflict for getting power. Prospero was banished by Antonio by means of the conspiracy with Alonso. Prospero uses his magic to evoke the tempest for shipwrecking the ship on which Alonso and Antonio were returning from the marriage of Alonso's daughter. The tempest in this work symbolizes the chaos of Prospero's inner world as well as that of nature that is accompanied by the destruction of hierarchy. However, Prospero reverses his desire for revenge into the ritual of rebirth, fertility and reconciliation by inducing the marriage of Miranda and Ferdinand, the son of Alonso, who conspired with Antonio in his banishment. Propero struggles to overcome his personal revenge for universal harmony and the peace of the world.
In the view of post-colonialism, Prospero has been criticized as the spokesman of imperialism who occupied Caliban's island by means of his magic power, the symbol of spirituality or civilization. He has tried to educate Caliban by teaching language and morality. But Caliban revolts against his enforced morality and Christian value by daring to rape Miranda. As soon as Caliban tastes the alcoholic effects of Stephano's liquor. he shows the form of pseudo-Bacchic rite in which he worships Stephano as a god Furthermore, he conspires with Stephano to usurp the authority of Prospero. The problem is that Shakespeare can be criticized by showing his parody of Caliban's Bacchic rite in favor of the Christian one. As a reconciler between civilization and nature, Propero seems to fail in his role even though he succeeds in creating harmony and peace with Alonso's group. However, Shakespeare, in this final work, can be evaluated as a success in developing the theatre into a temple which heals the conflicts of the world.
