This paper examines "the overcoming process of male ruling desire for the femininity" in The Tempest. In the early modern period, England and other imperialistic countries cast their greedy eyes over a new world, and want to govern and control it as they like. A colony and its people, especially women seem to be 'the Other' to them. And the colonizers not only fear the other's subversive power, but also want to maintain 'their' male power over them. Colonialists, therefore, under the pretense of enlightening and civilizing of the natives, exploit a colony and its people. In the process, native women especially suffer from untold agony mentally and physically.
In The Tempest, male desire for ruling a virgin world is revealed in Gonzalo's vision of utopia, Ferdinand's desire for Miranda, and Prospero's wily control over Miranda and Caliban. Prospero, as a patriarchal father and a colonialist, invents 'the narratives' to 'educate' them. For this purpose, he 'makes' Sycorax an evil witch, and blames Caliban for trying to rape Miranda. He even tries to control Nature by his magic book and wand, the symbols of the patriarchal power. However, Gonzalo's vision reveals its own self-contradiction and Prospero's plan finally fails.
Though Miranda partially helps her father to achieve his rehabilitation of Milan, she does not subordinate her vitality to the patriarchal power. Prospero says that he 'gifts' her to Ferdinand, but it is Miranda herself, not her father that chooses him as a husband. Furthermore, she is both a reason and a purpose of Prospero's life. Caliban, a true mother's son, curses Prospero, insisting on his authentic right of ruling the island, and pointing out the foul secret of the 'fair' civilization's benefits. As a result, men's patriarchal desire to escape from the femininity and control it wholly is not possible. Having recognized this, Prospero finally gives up his patriarchal magic book and wand, acknowledges Caliban as his, and decides to depend on Miranda for the remaining years.
