Let’s think about what aspects of the translations of Chinese classical literature in Korea should be corrected. First of all, easy words and conceptual terms which general people can understand should be used, the standards for which should be Korean dictionaries available in the market. Secondly, translated terms, which are selected for interpretations, should be followed by annotations. Finally, textual vitality that a translated version has in itself, that is, its role as a reference book for the next generation, should be considered.
Let me comment on Chinese classic 『The Art of War』. First, the principles of its translation should be clearly presented and the principles should be strictly observed. The translation of the original can’t satisfy all the readers so a translator should consider the target of the translation and then, propose a suitable direction. Second, once Chinese sentences are translated into general Korean ones, the Korean sentences should be read independently from the Chinese original and their meanings should be easily delivered to general people. Finally, speciality should be raised. High-leveled translators can offer easily understandable translations to readers. Especially, in the case of Chinese classical literature, extensive understanding of the Chinese language and Chinese learning is really necessary.
