This study describes the simulation method to predict the vibration of MDPS system, which results in cabin noise, and suggest modified designs to reduce the motor induced noise at high speed operation of steering wheel. The simulation was performed in two steps based on finite element analysis. In the first step, electromagnetic forces versus rotation angle of rotor were calculated using 2D electromagnetic field analysis with the current inputs given from experiments. The resultant forces per teeth in time domain were transformed to that of frequency domain, then it was applied to the rotor and stator of system model as excitational forces. In the second step, the whole system consists of a steering wheel, a steering column and a power head with motor and gears was constructed. For major parts, free-free modal characteristics were confirmed through tests and simulation from component level to assembly level. Average static torque was applied to the motor of system model in order to calculate bearing stiffness at the operational condition of interest using static analysis. The equivalent stiffness of 8 bearings was modeled as spring elements in the system model. The 18<SUP>th</SUP> order vibration was calculated using mode based vibration analysis and a good agreement was observed between the tests and simulation in the frequency region of interest. Finally, modified designs for suppressing operational noise caused by motor were discussed based on the observation of the simulation and their effectiveness were verified on tests.
