Since traditional computer-aided architectural design (CAAD) systems had the capacity only to manage graphical and geometric information without semantic information about building components and spaces, it was difficult to construct algorithms to evaluate design solutions in the CAAD systems. However, since the advent of BIM (Building Information Modeling) for managing semantic building information, it has become increasingly feasible to find the quantities and properties of building components and spatial relationships in CAAD systems.
Thus, this study has intended to develop computational algorithms to obtain proper design solutions by evaluating the solutions using Space Syntax analysis during the CAAD process. To extract the information for Space Syntax analysis from design solutions, this study proposes algorithms to recognize building information produced in the form of Industry Foundation Classes(IFC), deduce the necessary topological information, and store the information in the form of matrices. To evaluate the solutions generated during the design process, Space Syntax theory was employed to demonstrate the potential for adding a spatial analysis function into CAAD applications though calculating the integration value for each space from spatial connectivity based on J-graphs. To verify the proposed algorithms, an experimental program named J-Studio for Architectural Planning (J-SAP) has been developed to evaluate easily and quickly design solutions in real time. The results of verification are as follows: (1) Topological information was extracted from the IFC formatted building information, (2) The information was decoded into a dimensionless representation and legible J-graph, (3) Mathematical analyses for choosing a better design solution during computer-aided architectural designing were presented, and (4) The examination of the privacy level of each space in a building through Space Syntax analysis was discussed. Thus, we can demonstrate the possibility of determining the social properties and accessibility of spaces during the CAAD process to satisfy client requirements.
