In this study, the body mass index(BMI) of elderly women aged between 70~75 years was measured. 10 subjects were designated as an obese group with a BMI of 25kg/m² or more, while 10 as the normal group with a BMI of less than 25kg/m². Lower extremity joint angles observed during the support period while performing gait motions of stair descent were analyzed by an independent t-test, using the SPSS 12.0 statistics program. The following results were obtained. There was a difference in the average values of ankle joint angle changes between the groups by each event, but it was not statistically significant(p>.05). As for changes in the knee joint angles, the obese group showed more flexed angles than the normal group during gait motions of stair descent by each event, but the difference was not statistically significant(p>.05). The obese group appeared to be more flexed in all events of changes in hip joint angles, compared to the normal group. However, there was no statistically significant difference(p>.05). Overall, the hip joint, knee joint, and ankle joint played an important role in performing gait motions of stair descent in this order. Lower extremity extensor muscles in the obese group could not support the upper body weight sufficiently at the early phase of support period than the normal group in general. Due to fear that they might fall, the obese subjects seemed to bend their upper body forward during stair descent to move the upper body weight more smoothly.
