The founding ideas of Christian universities' in Korea have almost been missing in their educational practices because of their environmental transformations and structural problems. It is necessary for the Christian education to identify their problems and to formulate their solutions.
In order to illuminate an approach to their realities this paper surveys and analyzes Calvin's ideal for schooling and his Geneva Academy where his ideal was realized. He is studied partially because the quin-centennial on his birth brought about attention to him last year and partially because his ideals and practices imply solutions to their problems.
Calvin's ideals for schooling and his Geneva Academy's organization and curriculum are analyzed. Particularly, his ideals and ideas, instruction, curriculum, teachers' faith, student guidance, and consequences on the Reformation and Christian education are categorized. Based on the analysis, challenges and alternatives to the Christian universities' realities are suggested. The suggestions include reaffirmation of their founding ideas and ideals, effective accommodation of curriculum to their ideals and purposes, their faculties and employees' Christian attitude, and their intimate cooperation to the Christian churches.
