In the germany of the 1960s the documentary theater is not an entirely new phenomenon. But the german documentary theater of the day is not an important genre of the drama. In those days Rolf Hochhuth, Heinar Kipphardt and Peter Weiss wrote documentary dramas. Of them Peter Weiss become well known as principal documentary dramatist.
He is the only one that wrote documentary dramas and a theory of the documentary theater, a brief fourteen-point theatise. He wrote especially three dramas 『the Investigation(Die Ermittlung)』, 『the Song of the lusitanian Bogey』and 『Viet Nam Discourse(Viet Nam Diskurs)』. But of these dramas 『the Song of the lusitanan Bogey』is rated high as documentary drama.
This drama is worked with authentic materials, for example, newspapers, magazines etc. But this theatre is different from the general dramas. The differences is showed in the figure, the language and the forms of expression. Peter Weiss describes all figures of this drama as the actual and historical persons. The figures who appear on the stage are expressed as representative types and at the same time their actions are replaced into a historical context.
Also in the language he has the use of verse which has free rhythm With them he makes it easy, the contents of the drama to communicate, and concentrates the audience the theme of the drama. The composition of the time and space does not take the concluded form but opened form In the techniques of expression characterize montage, pantomime and chorus in this drama. The Montage appears in the plot, figure and language.
The composition of the plot consists of antithematic pieces and contrasted forms.
With them Peter Weiss causes the variation of the theme. The pantomime also is used manifold In this theatre the pantomime especially is used for the whole scene and the dramatic effect. The chorus plays a role of the reference and comment.
In the structure, this drama in 11 scene is divided into two acts. But this drama has circle-structure. At the same time Peter Weiss criticizes NATO-system which support the colonization of portugal in the africa(the angola and the mozambique). In the staging makes Peter Weiss simple and tries to remove illustrated element.
In spite of this dramatic composition, most critics refer more about the drama-form and the dramatic technique than about the aesthetic worth. Some critics regard this drama as an agitive drama. But Peter Weiss aims at being matter of fact in this drama and sees its main task in expanding the public's consciousness of the contradictions of the colonization of the portugal in the africa.
