The thesis is to analyze the poetic technique and the work's meaning of Lee Hyo Seok's novel, About the Time when the Buckwheat Flower Blossoms. There have been many studies on the work but few discussions on the poetic technique. In fact, Lee Hyo Seok liked poem so much that his first work was a poem, not a novel. But in the actual novel time, he wrote a poetic novel, too. He thought that the best novel is the one containing the poetic beauty. 「About the Time when the Buckwheat Flower Blossoms」is the typical work showing his viewpoint of novel.
This work is constructed using the poetic technique of metaphor and symbol. The plot of this novel is similar to the plot of a poem, because the basic plot of this work is represented by the method of metaphor and symbolic system. In this novel two elements, moon and a donkey, play very symbolic role.
The main character in the work is Heoseangwon, an itinerant trader who is an old and plain man. His characteristics are compared to the donkey to show various literary effects. Especially, his humble and pitiful life is compared to the donkey resulting in arousal of deep sympathy. And His begetting son is also compared to bring forth donkey's to show that a humble and pitiful man found his own self and happiness after overcoming his complex.
The moon is the background of this work. And the moon symbolizes a Seongsseobang's lover. The moon is represented by erotic metaphor to show the yearning love of itinerant trader who is wandering from place to place looking up at the moon along his way.
Each word in this work plays a very important role as much as the word in a poem. Each word has a significant meaning and is arranged elaborately in the work. Using this metaphorical word supports the structure of this novel firmly and deepens the meaning.
