Lacan's much quoted maxim, 'there is only a signifier which slides indefinitely' or 'the Unconscious is structured like a language' has been an ironic subterfuge to safeguard his phonocentric position His densely convoluted writings, like a smoke screen, have befogged his ulterior intention and motivation, thereby hoodwinking many readers, just as the Prefect and his crew were tricked by the Minister in 'The Purloined Letter'
The purpose of this paper is to call for a serious attention to, and a thorough perusal of, 'Seminar on The Purloined Letter' Once we muddle through his rough text, we will soon discover Lacan's double stance on the one hand, Lacan unflaggingly proclaims that there is only the signifier. yet through the backdoor, he ushers in the diachronic linguistics, or a lexical onomatopoeia, to borrow Attridge's terminology, if not a pre-Saussurian phonocentrism
Lacan is on the horns of a dilemma, when he has to clarify a psychoanalytic thesis He has to demonstrate how the Unconscious surfaces or flickers momentarily, while being fully aware of Derrida's relentless and sometimes even exorbitant argument throughout ills entire writings against any relation between signifier and signified,
To take arms against differance and m order to rescue the psychoanalytic discourses from a total dissolution, Lacan turns to Freud, Heidegger, Hegel, and surreptitiously harbors a pre-Saussurian linguistics, while making a public avowal to a synchronic linguistics His such consistently inconsistent(double) gesture splits his discourse, and aporia opens agape Lacan welcomes the Hegelian dialectics as a saving grace to heal the wound he himself inscribes m his discourses Yet it remains at stake whether the negative dialectics can recuperate the lack(la fente) that Lacan valorizes as the foremost factor of restoring what disappears in the closed cham of signifiers
