It has been reported that illegal drug abuse is one of the emerging problems and continuously increasing in recent years. It is important that find out the extent of illegal drug-abuse and comprehend attitudes toward various drug-abuse issues for developing new strategies to reduce or prevent illegal drug abuse. Using data from 2,500 male an female adults in 7 major metropolitan cities, this study estimates the prevalence of drug abuse and also examines drug abuser's types of drug, demographic characteristics, motives of drug use, and purchase channel, etc. In addition, this study attempts to find adult citizen's attitudes toward various issues related to drug abuse and policy. Major findings of this empirical study as follows. First, it is found that 2.5% of this sample is shown to have experiences of illegal drug abuse and 4.6% of respondents has experienced a broad sense of drug abuse. Second, in demographic characteristics of drug abusers, almost of drug abusers is male(82.8%), and age distribution is 20-29(25.9%), 30-39(28.4%), and 40-49(23.3%). In terms of job categories, blue-collar workers(9.4%) show the highest rate and it is also reported that students(6.7%), those in sale(6.3%) and service-related job(5.6%), and the unemployed(5.6%) are relatively higher rate. It is also shown that married person appears to have lower rate and those who have religion are less likely to have the experience of drug use. Third, it is revealed that 61.9% of drug abusers reply curiosity as a motive of drug abuse. In addition, it is shown that 67.2% of drug abusers get information from friends or coworkers and 50.8% purchase or get drugs from them. This study found that drug abusers use drugs at friend's house(38.5%), their own home(26.2%), or amusement place(13.9%). Most of all drug abusers(96.6%) reply to have never punished from it. Fourth, almost respondents(93.9%) have a negative attitudes against drug abuse, but they perceive less harmful in comparison with other crimes. It is reported that 62.1% of the respondents reply drug use helping for relaxation and 42.9% believe that it can get rid of stress. However, only 14.0% feel curiosity or have favorable impression toward drug use and it is reported that 9.3% feel a temptation of drug abuse. In addition, only 8.2% of the respondents have a favorable attitudes toward drug abuser appearing on TV or screen. Fifth, almost all respondents(90.0% and over) perceive that drug use is bad for both physical an mental health and has negative impact to family relations, job, and economic life. In addition, they perceive drug use induce socio-ethical problems, crimes, and other various accidents. It is reported that 94.0% consider drugs as causing bodily addiction an serious mind-dependence. Is is also shown that 83.9% perceive drug abuse a serious social problem. Sixth, respondents place the responsibility for drug abuse on drug users(52.5%), drug sellers(25.0%), government(9.0%), and family/friends(7.0%). In addition, respondents suggest as social causes of drug abuse, moral corruption(29.4%), economic problems(24.3%), an increase of amusement place(14.5%), socio-inequality(8.8%), lax enforcement of law(8.4%), an family disorganization(8.3%). Finally, it is reported that 91.8% reply to need a rigid enforcement of regulation and 90.0% emphasize a severe punishment. However, 55.3% of the respondents reply a need of both punishment an medical/psychical treatment. In addition, research findings show that a primary policy is suggested by prevention/education(32.5%), medical treatment(26.6%), regulation/punishment(17.0%), social support/affection (8.4%), public campaign(5.5%).
