This study examines the drivers' attitudes about drink driving and the punishments to drink driving. And it investigates the realities of drink driving among drivers in Seoul area.
To achieve those purposes, survey was conducted, using questionnaires. Data were collected from 1,007 drivers in Seoul. Major research findings are summarized in the below.
As to respondents' attitudes toward drink driving, most respondents perceived that drink driving is not commonplace in the community. And most respondents are aware of the negative consequences of drink driving. About 80% of respondents believed that their family and friends disapprove of drink driving.
Regard to punishment, 80% of respondents thought that drink driving deserves legal punishment. Most respondents have correct legal knowledge about drink driving.
It investigated realities of drink driving among drivers in Seoul area. Driving when over the legal limit at least once in the previous 12 months was reported by 27.6% of respondents. Drink-driving behaviors are examined in terms of their socio-demographic characteristics. Males indicated a higher level of drink-driving behavior than females. And those who have a high level of family income, attained higher education have high level of drink-driving behavior. With respect to the relationship between drinking characteristics and drink-driving, it is found that those who are heavier drinkers, problem drinkers have high level of drink-driving behavior. Also, data show that the younger people are when first drank, the greater their likelihood of drink-driving. Study of drink-drivers' behavior characteristics indicates that those who have experience riding with drunken drivers and involve problem behaviors after drinking, offend basic order, behave violent act have high level of drink-driving behavior. This result suggests that drink-driving is part of a larger syndrome of problem behavior.
Factors which affect on drink-driving are family income level, problem drinking, attitudes favorable to drink-driving, riding with drunken drivers, safe driving habit, belief to conventional values, threats of formal sanctions. Drink-driving among respondents is most effected by family income level, followed by problem drinking.
Based on findings in this study, it suggests several ways for eliminating drink-driving. Educational intervention is needed to delay age of first intoxication. Treatment programs for problem drinkers are needed. Information and education about safe driving are needed. In regard to social level, overt disapprovals of drink driving and riding with drunken drivers are needed. A great deal of effort need to be made to increase the certainty of control over drink driving. Prevention and intervention efforts targeted at reducing overall risk level of problematic lifestyle are needed.
