This article is to analyze the national identity and vision of racial friendship and harmony revealed in Cooper’s and Twain’s Novels. Cooper created the distorted and imperfect image of whites and American Indians in The Last of the Mohicans because he put an emphasis on the whiteness and divided Indians into good indians and bad Indians. However, although his perception of a human race was problematic, he showed a racial friendship between whites and Indians through Hawkeye and Chingachugook. In Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain also brought forward the racial harmony between whites and blacks through the mutual complementary relationship between Huck and Jim. Cooper and Twain showed the vision of racial friendship and harmony during the important period of formation of American national identity.
