Word association is important for understanding the structure of collocation. In this study, I tried to examine appropriate method of calculating word association in corpora and present the results of it as a way of automatic collocation extraction: t-test, chi-squared measure, Mutual Information, etc. Firstly, I described several methods for measuring word association, evaluating and comparing them. Based on the data-driven language learning, this study was designed to develop a model of college-level corpus class that was supposed to identify the association strength between word pairs. Secondly, a questionnaire of 21 items asking about the experience of the corpus class was conducted and analyzed. Pre & post tests on word association were also taken to examine the students’ collocation competence. The result of this study suggested that the above methods should be optimally combined to be more effective in measuring word association than any single method to show real association strength.
