Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) is a digital representation of physical and functional characteristics of a facility. VDC technology has been aggressively utilized in the design phase in order to secure design quality and avoid any mistakes in design. The application of VDC to a construction project is also expected to help project participants better understand the design documents and enhance communication between stakeholders. However, most general contractors are still reluctant to utilize the VDC model for their project management, to some extent, because of lack of empirical evidence of me merit of VDC. The paper presents the pilot application of VDC to two on-going academic building construction projects. The research team created VDC models collaboratively with architects, general contractors, and subcontractors, and then monitored how these models could be used at the job site coordination meetings. The research team found that VDC helped project participants improve construction management practices, but also experienced some barriers.
