The aim of this study is the appearance and meaning of rhetorical question in the 67 essays and 67 articles by university students. The results are as follows.
First, there are 5 articles which are used rhetorical questions among 67 articles, on the other hand, 46 essays among 67 essays. This is because of 3 differences of kinds of writing, readers, and consciousness of writer. In the case of speaking or dialogue, speaker consider listener because both are the same space. But, in the writing, writer does not consider reader as much as in case of speaking, because writing is lonely work and reading is done without of writer.
Second, indirect questions are often used in articles more than in essays. Indirect question 1S embraced in declarative sentence, so the effect of the question is little than that of direct question. The reason of using indirect question is almost same with that of few rhetorical question is used in articles.
Third, in articles, almost rhetorical questions are used in the part of introduction. So, I compared rhetorical questions which used in the part of introduction of essays and articles. It is common point that the function of the questions is to present the topic for discussion and to induce the participation from readers. But, in the case of essays, there is another function of rhetorical question to progress the contents of writing. Besides, the position of rhetorical question is appeared not only in the part of introduction, but also other parts like title, body, and results.
Precedent articles of rhetorical question has been focus on the speaking, but this article study of writing, especially both essay and article. And I research the detailed cases also, not only abstract theory. Furthermore, I suggest the new way to applicate rhetoric to education of writing as rhetoric of communication. But next study is necessary about several cases according to other positions of rhetorical questions in essays and articles
