In this article, First, discusses the northeastern island, the name was Nokdun Island beside Tumen(豆滿) River and Maritime Provinces during the Chosun Dynasty. Second, this study aims to examine the geographical texts on the Nokdun Island about late Chosun Dynasty. Finally, increase of the concern about the northeastern territory of the late Chosun Dynasty has got a particular meaning.
Anyway, that area is Border line between the Chosun, China, Russia. The Nokdun Island belonged Northern region of the Korean Peninsula and early history of Chosun Dynasty. However due to the fall of Chosun Dynasty in late 19C, colonized the Maritime Territory and finally it was occupied by the Russian Empire after the conclusion of the Convention of Beijing(北京條約) on September, 1860.
The relationship of the Maritime Territory of Siberia to pre-modern Korea extends far back in history. The Chosun people who lived near by Hamkyung(咸慶道) provence, they emigration to the Maritime Territory was prompted primarily by the barrenness of the land of the Tumen River and their economic hardships such as heavy land taxes. According to the documents of Korean emigrants to Siberia, they had started moving to the maritime regions since 1860s, when the governance of King Cheoljong (哲宗 1849 - 1863) was still maintained. At that time the island moved to Russian side. Finally connected island and Maritime Territory of Siberia. For this study, some geographical texts, for example such as the Daedongyeogido(大東輿地圖), Yeogido(輿地圖), Agukyeogido(俄國輿地圖), Chosunchundo(朝鮮全圖), are analyzed and compared in terms of knowledge of Nokdun Island.
From time to time some Chosun people crossed the border line to continue the seasonal farming for their livelihood along the land of the Tumen River that served as part of the boundary between China, northern districts of Chosun, and Russia. Chosun people who emigrated to Russia, as soon as the Commer-cial Treaty of Amity between Chosun and Russia was negotiated in 1884. That Commercial Treaty continued until finished Japanese colonial time.
The results also show the geographical knowledge of the Nokdun Island and has became go out the Chosun Dynasty. Then reveal how we recognized and memorized the significance of the northeastern territory of the Chosun Dynasty.
