In the age of globalization, the status of English is more dominant than any other language, but the users of English easily dismiss or are unaware of its ideological aspects. Robert Phillipson is one of the pioneers who critically reacts to the spread of English in the global context. In this paper, I explore Robert Phillipson’s linguistic imperialism and provide its implications in Korean society. Material and immaterial properties constitute the structural sphere of his linguistic imperialism. As a material property, the financial allocations play a critical function, particularly in the age of neoliberalism. Media is an essential means through which the ideology of English (immaterial property) is disseminated and reinforced. I also argue that, although Korea was not colonized by a western country, the sweeping power of globalization-neoliberalism and its ideological aspects greatly contribute to the spread of English in Korea, and Koreans should be aware of it.
