Two divergent views, the harms and benefits, are equally prominent concerning the effects of adolescent Internet use. The problem is that the possibility of reaping benefits from the Internet as well as giving away to its harmful potential both increase according to the time and extent spent online. Hence, Internet literacy, which encourages Internet use while enabling the user’s understanding and control of the medium’s potential harm, becomes an ever-important concept. The present study provides a conceptual examination of media literacy and proposes a skill-oriented approach to Internet literacy. Furthermore, how Internet literacy is related to parental socioeconomic status, Internet use, and Internet literacy are empirically examined.
It was found that Internet literacy is categorized into use/play literacy and production/participation literacy and that a mother’s Internet literacy strongly influences the Internet literacy of her children. In addition, we discovered that parental interest in and supervision of children’s media use also affected the Internet literacy of their children. We present the policy implications of our findings as well as a discussion and propositions regarding future research on adolescent Internet literacy.
