The thinking structure of Pasternak developed from a single world view of “life” to a new triple world view of ‘life-death-resurrection’. Since or before writing “Doctor Zhivago“ Pasternach wanted to cover literary works about religion, philosophy, and arts as well as developing interesting plots. In the surface structure, “Doctor Zhivago” gives epic scope through various motifs, but in the deeper structure, it expresses the writer’s outlook of creation, world view, and philosophical view.
According to Pasternak, human beings are already resurrected when they are born, and the human lifetime is nothing but a low-level existential living. People who have lived a life of pain and sacrifice will live a higher level life.
In these ceaseless cycles of ‘life-death-resurrection’, another new life is impossible without death, and another gain is impossible without loss.
In “Doctor Zhivago”, death carries out a role as a main theme in a deep structure , and it also plays as a framework of a story. Abundant in plots, and full of fairytale-mythological motifs and romantic(melodramatic) motifs, Pasternak’s novels feature strong narratives.. Different from folklore, a study object of PR, role motifs of “Dortor Zhivago” are not tightly connected, nor continuous. Instead, they are scattered in all directions. Many researchers already told about the adventurous, melodramatic features of motifs, and main novel elements in “Doctor Zhivago” implicates philosophical, religious meaning beyond simple ‘entertainment’ or ‘interest’.
