The purpose of this study was to describe how social workers, who worked for immigrant women, were acquiring cultural competence in social work practice. Cultural competence is considered to be relevant to social work practice with clients belonging to ethnic and racial minority groups. Social workers should have a knowledge base for their clients’ cultures, and learn about the client’s life and situation. For achieving cultural competence, social workers should understand culture and its functions in human behavior and society. For the study, 10 social workers in Daejeon were interviewed. As a result, the essential meaning of experience of social workers about cultural competence was “acquisition”. They were learning and acquiring cultural competence by themselves in difficult circumstances. Cultural competence of the workers, who have had experience with immigrant women, is comprised of 5 components: 〈knowing about me and others〉, 〈understanding their background〉, 〈learning by trial and error〉, 〈sharing with each other〉, and 〈growing as a professional〉.
