Sim Jie-Young. The Corpus-Based Study on the Verbs begin and start. The New Studies of English Language & Literature 49 (2011): 227-252. The purpose of this study is to find out the semantic similarity and difference between the verbs begin and start by analyzing and comparing their meanings and noun collocations from BYU/COCA. This paper reveals that the verbs begin and start have similar meanings and semantic characteristics which cause both verbs to collocate with the same nouns such as ‘journey’, ‘class’ and so on, whilst they also have completely different meanings and the characteristics which make them collocate with totally different nouns from each other. The semantic characteristic of begin is that it tends to collocate with nouns which have no causative sense and events which are temporally bound and located in time. The meanings and semantic characteristics of begin are reflected in its own noun collocations. Nouns such as ‘task’, ‘apprenticeship’, ‘tenure’ etc. The unique semantic characteristic of start, which distinguishes it from begin, is that it collocates with nouns that have causative sense and events which are temporally unbound. The meaning of start is also reflected in its noun collocations. Nouns such as ‘machinery’, ‘fire’ etc. This study proves that the verbs begin and start have similar meanings which cause them to collocate the same nouns and make them look similar. Meanwhile each verb has its own semantic characteristics and meanings that clearly distinguish it from the other. (Silla University)
