In Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (hereafter DPRK), there has been an East Asian sense from the early days. It was based upon “Marxist-Leninist proletarian internationalism”.
This article aims to discuss East Asia as appeared in 『Children’s Literature』 Magazine of DPRK in the 1950s when the DPRK emphasised the importance of “Marxist-Leninist proletarian internationalism”.
East Asian countries that appeared in 『Children’s Literature』 in the 1950s are DPRK, the Republic of Korea (hereafter ROK), China, Vietnam and Japan. Of these, ROK is depicted as a colony of US imperialism, and Japan as an oppressor as in the imperial Japanese era. Only China and Vietnam, “Socialist brother countries”, are represented as friends, under “Marxist-Leninist proletarian internationalism”.
There are only two works appeared in 『Children’s Literature』 in the 1950s that cover Vietnam. Therefore, this article will focus upon China as appeared in 『Children’s Literature』 in the 1950s.
In the 1950s, children’s literature of DPRK considered China as a good friend to the people of DPRK, and perceived China, as well as Vietnam, “People’s Democratic brother countries”.
And yet, in the 1980s, as the Juche Idea became the only set of principles, the East Asian sense disappeared from children’s literature of DPRK. Instead, the place was replaced with Anti-imperialism. Therefore, children’s literature of DPRK that asserted Anti-imperialism struggles with weapons, transformed into ‘Songun Children’s Literature.’
