Seoul, the capital city or Korea, has been the home of various industries. Especially in the early colonial period, there was no big city like Seoul in Korea, and it acted like an industrial center. Weaving industry was one of those industries that were concentrated in the city. Although large amount of fabrics was produced outside Seoul, it was done by domestic weaving mainly for self~consumption. In the area of commercialized factory production, Seoul was the center at least until the 1920s.
Cotton and silk fabrics and various types of bands were main products of weaving industry in Seoul. Among them cotton fabrics were produced the most. It experienced boom and slump caused by the World War I. Bands were traditional consumption goods mainly for children. Bands production also went through ups and downs in the late 1910s, but it gradually decreased in the 1920s, due to the change of lifestyle. On the contrary, silk fabric production increased in the late 1920s. High import duties on Chinese silk fabrics seemed to have caused the change.
The reason for boom and slump of fabric production in Seoul in the late 1910s was not yet sincerely analyzed. Some articles provided "import~substitution" hypothesis, but it wasn"t consistent with the trend seen in trade statistics. My new hypothesis is that it was activated by inflation transmitted from Japanese economy: high inflation created winners and loosers, and winners tried to buy more made~in~Seoul fabrics. Several contemporary articles supported this hypothesis.
Another interesting feature of Seoul weaving industry was the existence of many small factories which hired 5 to 10 male weavers. Weaving is commonly considered as women"s job, but in Seoul female employees were concentrated in several power~loom installed, relatively big factories. The other factories were full of male workers. The reason is not easy to know, but needed to be analyzed to understand weaving industry in Seoul.
