This thesis covers the contents of 50 ancient documents housed in th Ieiu Confucian School, which is located in Yongdam-dong, Juju City. The ancient documents housed in the Jeiu Confucian School includes eight Jeolmokryu(records on enforcement regulations), two Seonsaengan(records on the names, positions and the dates of birth of officials), nine Hyangan(records on names of families qualified to become an official), ten Chongeumrok(records on a list of Confucian scholars), five Pumgwanan(records on a list of hierarchical official ranks, twelve records related to Confucian School and 4 other documents. Most of the ancient documents were written in the latter period of the Joseon Dynasty, more specifically from the first year of King Injo (1623) to the year 1902. The contents of those ancient documents are as follows.
First, the Jeolmokryu documents described the economic foundation of the Jeiu Confucian School. It also recorded regulations about collecting taxes on the lands belonging to the Jeju Confucian School, farmers" protest against levied taxes, and new measures taken by the Jejumok government. The Jeolmokryu documents are about strengthening the economic foundation of the Jeiu Confucian School by preventing the privatization of the lands belonging to the. School.
In order to manage the lands efficiently, the Jeolmokryu documents recorded the farmers of lands belonging to the Jeju Confucian School, crops, areas, tax amount, and sales relationships.
Second, those ancient documents includes the contents of strengthening education for students. According to the documents, the abolition the system of hiring teachers was preventing efficient education, so the system of hiring teachers was reintroduced to enhance education for students. Some documents includes teachers" duties and a list of students.
Third, through the ancient documents, we could see the changes at that time. For example the decree of abolishing Confucian schools in 1871 forced the Gyullim Confucian School to be merged with the Jeiu Confucian School.
Fourth, in the Seonsaengan documents , were listed the names of the successful Jeju candidates in the state civil and military service exams. The Seonsaengan documents included the names of influential figures in the Jeiu region.
The Jeiu Confucian School was a typical Jeju school. Considering the merge of the Gyullim Confucian School to the Jeiu Confucian School, a lot of ancient documents must have been housed in the Jeju Confucian School. However, most of the ancient documents were lost and destroyed. About 50 ancient documents were recently found and recovered. These documents are crucially significant to understand the integral aspects of Jeju education and country societies in the latter period of the Joseon Dynasty.
