Shakespeare projected into the communal enterprise of Henry’s war the vision of the British Empire to which the increasingly militaristic Elizabethan England was aspiring. But Shakespeare also makes us aware the contradictions implicit in Henry’s proto-imperial project mainly through the functional epic device: the Chorus. The Chorus makes us know how the ideological manipulation works through the official narrative for Henry’s glory. Above all, the play shows how a necessary ideological distinction between two nations－ virile English vs effeminate French－ is indispensible not only for the unity of people but also for the enterprise of the British Empire. But Henry’s rhetoric of unity on the battlefield turns out to be an ideology to erase the social division and the Irish issue. And finally, the ending of Chorus makes clear that the play about victory is also about instability and impermanence. Thus, with these critical reflections on Henry’s glorious war Shakespeare suggests that the vision of the British Empire must be viewed as an ideology which will be tested incessantly all through the English history.
